Does premature ejaculation ever disturb your sex life?
Believe it or not, studies estimate that it affects somewhere between 20% and 40% of men. If you are struggling with this problem and hope to overcome it, you are not alone.
Why do so many men have to deal with this?
Part of the reason is that there are many potential causes, and sometimes it’s hard to know what’s causing premature ejaculation for a specific individual.
Secondly, many of the medical or psychological treatments out there don’t give the men and couples who use them the kind of results they desire.
Often, there is more than one underlying problem, and premature ejaculation is just one symptom of them. While nothing can change the past, by dealing with the root cause of the dysfunction, a man can almost always improve the quality of his sexual experiences going into the future.
What would looking forward to that future mean to you?

The pharmaceutical industry has attempted to frame the discussion about causes of premature ejaculation in terms of brain chemistry. But studies and clinical experience have shown that simply taking pills or using a numbing cream on the penis without addressing the psychological causes are not likely to work.
Of course they’re not. For most men, the biggest factor causing premature ejaculation is in the mind. For those kinds of causes, there are methods of gaining control that can improve every aspect of the sexual experience—without negative side effects.
I’d like to extend an invitation to you right now to take a look at the general causes of premature ejaculation. I’ve put the causes in the form of a checklist to help you pinpoint what might be causing your own.
Now I’m going to be frank with you. Nothing on this site is intended to be a substitute for a visit to your primary health care provider. If you have any reason to believe that the cause of premature ejaculation for you may be related to a medical condition, especially a serious one, you really need to discuss it with a licensed medical professional and do it without delay. But if you are not in a desperate or uncontrolled medical situation and would like to gain further insight into the causes of premature ejaculation, please read on...
Physical Injury
Physical injury is by far the least common cause of premature ejaculation, but nearly always requires some kind of intervention from a medical professional. Psychotherapy and hypnotherapy can increase the effectiveness of medical treatment.
Questions to ask yourself:
Have I suffered spinal or brain trauma?
Have I had recent abdominal or torso surgery?
Have I recently broken a hip or waist bone?
Do I have sensory nerve damage?
If you answered yes to one or more of these, you may need to have the underlying injury treated before trying other methods.
Drug side effects or withdrawals
This is another example of an uncommon cause of premature ejaculation. If you are taking prescription or over-the-counter medication that has sexual side effects, you should consider the possibility that they may be causing the problem or making a latent problem worse.
Questions to ask yourself:
Am I taking or have I recently stopped taking an antidepressant?
Do I drink more than two alcoholic beverages daily?
Have I been taking any drugs containing pseudoephedrine?
Even though premature ejaculation is rarely caused by prescription or over the counter drugs, it is important to discuss with your doctor as a potential side effect. If you drink alcohol or use other recreational drugs in excess, you should consider ways of reducing your consumption.
Psychiatric Disability or Disorder
This is incredibly rare. Individuals suffering from severe or chronic mental illness can suffer a myriad of sexual effects caused by the disorder or medication used to treat it.
Questions to ask yourself:
Have I been diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, clinical depression, or psychosis?
Am I taking any medications intended to treat an ongoing psychiatric problem?
Do I feel chronically withdrawn, paranoid, or heavily weighed down by events in my life?
I cannot stress enough that if you have answered yes to any of these questions, you should discuss the problem with a licensed medical professional before pursuing any other path to mitigating the causes of premature ejaculation.
Relationship Distress
This is a more common cause of sexual dysfunction, including premature ejaculation, but still constitutes a minority of sufferers. Psychotherapy, couples therapy, hypnotherapy, and self improvement are shown to help with relationship problems, including those experienced in the bedroom.
Questions to ask yourself:
Is it difficult for me or my partner to discuss problems in or outside of our relationship?
Do I or my partner frequently become angry over small reasons?
Am I frequently worried about the direction of my relationship?
If your answer to any of these is yes, you should seriously consider methods of self-improvement for controlling premature ejaculation and also look for new ways to discuss the problem with your partner or lover. You may also consider individual or couples therapy as a way of learning new strategies for resolving relationship issues. Self-improvement programs are shown to be effective as well.
Psychological Distress
Of all the causes of premature ejaculation, this is the most common. In fact, it affects more men than all the others combined. And the good news is that it’s imminently controllable. Because the cause is rooted in the thoughts and mental processing pathways, men who have sexual difficulties caused by psychological distress almost always can find relief through self-help programs, cognitive therapy, and hypnotherapy.
Questions to ask yourself:
Do I frequently feel anxious or stressed out?
Do I often worry about my sexual performance?
Have many of my past sexual experiences been negative?
Do I carry around feelings of poor confidence or inadequacy much of the time, especially related to my love life or sexual ability?
The term “psychological distress” sounds unpleasant. After all, it’s often hard for all of us to admit when we feel overpowered by negative feelings. But the first step to resolving this cause of premature ejaculation andw more importantly, to Taking Life Back, is to admit that there may be a problem, and to understand it. Then, realize that it can be resolved. And finally to take steps toward reducing and eliminating the problem. What if you could start toward that goal today?
As you can see, there are several different possible reasons that you’re suffering from premature ejaculation. The bottom line to all of them is that it is not your fault. Nobody chooses to suffer from a sexual difficulty. Some of those causes require medical intervention. But for the vast majority of men, medical intervention is not necessary. As I also describe on this site, medical treatments have limited effectiveness and nearly always come with undesirable side effects. And medical treatments are never guaranteed to work.
